1and1 Blows Donkey Balls!
Saturday, January 17, 2009 2:24I have used a few web hosting services, and I run Linux and have set up my own stuff before. I have a fairly good grasp on getting things up and going.
I was being a nice guy and trying to set a script up from someone on their 1and1 hosting. This simple task shouldn’t have been a big deal, on a normal setup it takes 5 min tops. Holy hell does 1and1 suck – I want to hope, that maybe he was just on some old server, I don’t know. Getting PHP5 going was easy enough, a little .htaccess, but I could not get Zend Optimizer working, and all they did was direct me to a page on how to do it, but it shouldn’t have been nearly that hard. I eventually after a couple hours just called it quits, it was ridiculous.
Why the fuck would they not have Zend Optimizer installed locally? Why do I have to download Zend Optimizer (oh and if you download it from Zends site you have to sign up to it), extract it, find a corresponding file, upload it to the server, then drop a php.ini file into my root directory, then find out the long path name by click on ‘domains’ from my control panel, then even though the directions don’t say it you have to click on one of your domain names so you can find the actual system path to your root directory (I had no clue, I had to ask support, I’m like “where is it?!”), then put it all together to point to your uploaded file…… A BUNCH OF BULLSHIT!@!@!!!! After that was all said and done I still couldn’t get it to work even though my phpinfo() said it was installed. Purely unnecessarily complex!
Oh well, fuck em. The guy signed up at HostGator and I cranked it out in 5 min. HostGators support may suck (according to others) but at least their shit works. I have only ever had a minor problem with their live support, but others seem to hate the support.

Is it a shared hosting account or a dedicated server? They said I am not allowed to install Zend Optimizer on shared hosting, so I got a dedicated server. I still had to install it manually, but now everything works perfectly. That is a small inconvenience, considering they have the cheapest servers around and their uptime is great…

I think it was shared hosting. We asked support they told us we could install it.

Choosing a good web site provider and registrar is critical for a successful internet business.
I have come to the conclusion that I made the dreadful error of choosing a company because it had a 5 page ad in a popular computer magazine. I believe I have put my trust in a straw man. In my opinion 1and1, with CEO Oliver Mauss, is a horrible company and many customers have voiced a host of complaints on various blogs.
It should be a warning that when their phone is answered by a recording that tells you if you have gotten a notice from NCO, a collection agency, to press a certain number. If they are a reputable business, why do they have to send so many accounts to a collection agency?
Patrick Frey (Patterico) of the Los Angeles District Attorneys Office alleges his domain was high jacked and put up for auction on SEDO. SEDO is an associate company of 1and1.
Patterico: “I believe I’m facing massive incompetence, thievery, or very possibly a deliberate combination of the two. It feels like evil intent — but not for political reasons. It feels like cyber extortion — people going after the almighty dollar. Commenters have pointed out corporate ties between 1&1, which can’t seem to process my timely renewal, and Sedo/Domcollect, which stood to profit from 1&1’s failure. Usually, corporate incompetence does not earn the corporation money — but 1&1 and its related companies have found a way to make money off of their own slipshod procedures.”
Patterico was able to regain his domain.
Also Investigative journalist, Kelli Jack, has written 30 articles about this company and has a suit pending against them. Kelli alleges that 1and1 stole her domain name and sold it. Kelli states: “1and1 should be shut down.” As of today Kelli is working with the Pennsylvania Attorney General.
I have filed complaints with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Federal Trade Commission, Eastern Pennsylvania Better Business Bureau, ICANN, and others. I recommend everyone else having a problem consider doing the same.
The Washington DC, Pennsylvania Better Business Bureau has them listed as “Unsatisfactory” Read comments on the BBB why. Read some customer comments on Red Flag.

Think twice about purchasing your services from 1and1. They have a nasty way of trying to keep your business by making it difficult to cancel services and billing your for services you have canceled. Watch out.
